NFDA Advocacy Summit Summary

IFDA Past President and Policy Board Member Linda Allan, IFDA and NFDA Past Presidents Randy Earl, CFSP and Dave Pearson, CFSP attended the NFDA Advocacy Summit in Washington D.C.

Over the two days, the group visited the entire Illinois Congressional delegation.  The group visited the offices of both U.S. Senators and 18 members of Congress.  They specifically met with Bustos, Hultgren, Bost, LaHood, Shimkus and Rush.  In Congresswoman Bustos's office, they talked with her Chief of Staff, Jon Pyatt.  Jon is the son of IFDA Past President Dick and Gayle Pyatt of Pinckneyville.

With the vast number of bills that come through Congress each session, members of Congress rely on staff specialists.  It is through these specialists that Congressional members decide their stand on issues.  The recommendations of the staff specialists are usually accepted.  They are the gatekeepers to the laws of our nation.  It is imperative that IFDA is there in Washington D.C. to represent the membership and the profession as a united front to advocate for the profession and meet with them.  Otherwise we have no chance of influencing the outcome of legislation.

The group met with lead staffers on four issues.

HR1911 - Increasing the veterans' death benefit from the current $300 to $700 and having it apply to any veteran regardless of the place of death.

HR1109 - Reinstating and increasing the Social Security death benefit from the current $255 to $1000 and indexing it for inflation.

HR250 - Ensures that a government shutdown does not prevent families of soldiers killed in the line of duty from receiving the military's death benefit stipend and allows families to attend and participate in the repatriation of the fallen soldier back in the United States.

HR4773/S2707 - Change in the wage and hour regulations that modified the definition of professional employees.  If the rules are implemented, many employees would be reclassified as hourly employees that would be subject to timekeeping and overtime provisions.

When talking about the experience, Dave Pearson said, "There are many changes that are going on within that world and we heard about many of them first hand."

Congress Votes to Allow WASPS in Arlington
Women Airforce Service Pilots, commonly known as WASPs, flew noncombat missions to free up male pilots for combat during WWII. During the war, the women were considered civilians; however, since 1977, federal law has granted them status as veterans. They have been eligible since 2002 to have their cremated remains inurned in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. Last year, the Army ruled that WASPs never should have been allowed to be inurned in Arlington and revoked their eligibility. Last week, both the House and Senate passed legislation reversing the Army’s decision; the bill has gone to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign the bill into law.
