Bob Smith Jr., a third generation funeral director, joined the family business in 1980. Bob earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and history from the University of Kansas, a MBA in international business and finance from DePaul University and spent several years in the U.S. Army. Prior to entering funeral service, Bob worked in the banking and insurance industries for several years. Bob has been very active in both funeral service and community organizations having served on numerous IFDA and NFDA Committees over the past 20 years, as president of the Northeastern Illinois Funeral Directors Association and as a board member for the Selected Independent Funeral Homes organization. Local activities include serving on his parish school board and parish finance committee including helping orchestrate a five million dollar church expansion project, serving as Past Grand Knight of his Knights of Columbus council and serving on the board of the Palatine and Sauganash local Chamber of Commerce.

Matthew R. Kendall grew up on a ranch outside of Winner, SD. Matt always had an interest in funeral service, stemming from having attended many family funerals as a child. He received a Bachelor’s of Arts and Science in Biology from South Dakota State University before moving to Portland, OR. Matt received his Associate’s of Applied Science in Funeral Service from Mt. Hood Community College, where he met his wife Kelly; who also practiced as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. Matt and Kelly then moved to Newport, OR, working together as licensed funeral directors and embalmers for Bateman Funeral Chapel, until Matt was offered an instructors position at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, IL in 2003. Matt, Kelly, son Robert (Bob) and daughter Abbey are members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Monmouth, IL and Matt is a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus. "If I can foster passion for funeral service in my students; what it means to be a funeral director, not just be able to pass a test, then I think that funeral service will have a bright future."

Cathlene Johnson is a General Manager with Smith & Thomas Funeral Homes, Inc. Smith & Thomas Funeral Home is headquartered at 5708 West Madison Street in Chicago, Illinois with additional locations: Smith & Thomas on 2nd, at 212 North 2nd Avenue in Maywood, Illinois and Johnson Funeral Home at 5838 West Division Street in Chicago, Illinois. Cathlene manages the Johnson Funeral Home location. 

A licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer, Cathlene is a September 2012 graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Wheeling, Illinois. Cathlene has worked with the family-owned and operated business since 2002. Prior to her entry into funeral service, she worked as a human resources management professional with Tribune Company and the American Bar Association. Cathlene holds memberships with Illinois Funeral Directors Association (IFDA) where she serves as a Region 1 Board Director, Illinois Selected Morticians Association (ISMA) where she serves as the chair of the Public Relations Committee, National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association (NFDMA), and National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA).

Matt grew up in the rural community of Wilmington, Illinois; attended National Louis University and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1995. Matt is a first generation funeral director and currently owns and operates Reeves & Baskerville Funeral Homes with locations in Coal City, Gardner, Morris and Wilmington, Illinois. He has earned his designation as a Certified Preplanning Consultant (CPC), as well as a Certified Crematory Operator (CCO), and also maintains his credentials as a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) through the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. In addition, Matt assists families as a Certified Funeral Celebrant, and acquired his training through the Insight Institute.

Matt is a member of IFDA, NFDA and Will County Funeral Service Association. He currently is a co-chair of NFDA’s Pursuit of Excellence Program, and in addition serves on the NFDA Spokesperson Team. He was selected as a Mentor for the Funeral Service Foundation’s Meet the Mentors Program at Emory University in 2018, and became the first Mentee to be asked to return as a Mentor. Matt has a passion for service to families, and has been blessed to build a team of loyal co-workers that hold the same core values and dedication to funeral service.

Greg graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1980 and received his Funeral Director's license in 1981. He began working in the family business and hasn’t looked back since. Greg takes pride in being a second generation funeral director carrying on the family tradition that has made Henderson Funeral Home what it is today. While preserving the many traditional aspects that keep families returning time and time again, Greg believes in implementing new ideas. He also believes in taking those ideas and using them to help the community. An example of this is a series of grief seminars he initiated for the community hosted by nationally renowned grief specialist Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D. Greg has also attended seminars at the Center for Loss in Fort Collins, CO in an effort to obtain his certificate in Death and Grief Studies from Colorado State University. Greg has earned the Certified Funeral Service Provider designation. Greg is currently serving as Immediate Past President of IFDA and is also Past President of IFDA District #8. Greg is a member, past president and treasurer of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin. He also was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Pekin Rotary Club in 1996 and is a past president of that organization. Additionally, he is a member the Pekin Area Chamber Commerce and served as director on its board, past chairman of the Pekin Marigold Festival Committee, Past Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board as well as a member of Pekin Elks Lodge #1271. Greg is also involved with St. Jude, has been a VIP for the Central Illinois telethon, 11-year veteran of the Memphis to Peoria run for St. Jude. 


NFDA Policy Board Representative

Stephanie Deiters, CFSP

Originally from Washington, IL, Stephanie decided on funeral service in high school. She graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1991 and began working at various area funeral homes. In 1996-97, she also taught part-time in the mortuary program at Carl Sandberg College in Galesburg. In 1999, she had the opportunity to open a funeral home in her hometown of Washington. Twenty years later, Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory serves Washington, East Peoria, and neighboring communities. She is also proud to serve the “4-legged family member” through Deiters Pet Services, which she began in 2008.

Beginning in 2011, Stephanie began her IFDA journey as a Regional Director, and she continued serving in various officer positions, including President in 2015-2016. She is excited to be back with the board in her capacity as NFDA Policy Board Representative. She is also a member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes and NFDA, where she is a member of the Pursuit of Excellence Hall of Excellence. A mother of 5, Stephanie keeps busy with her families activities, and also enjoys traveling, golf, and gardening.

Ron grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois; attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, where he earned his B.A. in Public Relations; and graduated from Des Moines Area Community College, Mortuary Science in 2017. Ron is a first-generation funeral director, and currently works at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Homes & Crematory in Naperville, Illinois. He has earned his designations as a Certified Preplanning Consultant (CPC) and as a Certified Crematory Operator (CCO).

Ron is a member of IFDA, NFDA, CANA, Selected Independent, and Order of the Golden Rule. He has a passion for service to families and pursuing ways to improve the funeral service profession. Ron is the father of two, Kendall and Evan, and stays involved with the Millikin University Alumni Association and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He looks forward to working with IFDA to better the organization for IFDA members and funeral service.

Trevor J. Davies, CCO

Trevor is a 2007 graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He served his apprenticeship with Davenport Family Funeral Home in Barrington, Illinois before returning home to his hometown of Monmouth, Illinois. Trevor worked at Turnbull Funeral Homes in Monmouth for 5 years before deciding to open his own funeral home with friend and colleague, Al McGuire, and is now co-owner of McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth.

Trevor keeps very active in the community, and is the Past Chairman of the Warren County United Way Endowment Committee, Past President of the Warren County Prime Beef Festival and still serves on the festival board, and is the Immediate Past President of the Warren County United Way Board of Directors.

He currently sits on the Board of Directors at Community National Bank in Monmouth, is a member of the Monmouth Flying Club, Monmouth Rotary Club, and is an Asst. Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 60 in Biggsville. Trevor also serves as a Deputy Coroner for Warren County. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Edith, and two sons, Carson and Parker.

Trevor would like to help IFDA continue making great strides to better the organization and provide the best information and experiences for its members. He is excited to help continue that momentum to see IFDA continue to grow!

Jay is a 1986 graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science. While there, he received the distinguished Restorative Art Award. He is a third generation funeral director after his grandfather, father, and uncle. Though he purchased Markwell Funeral Home in 1992, his 92-year-old father still visits daily. In 1998, Jay also acquired the Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville, IL, and currently services the towns of Casey, Martinsville, and Westfield, IL.

This is Jay's second stint on the IFDA Board of Directors, having served from 2010 to 2016. He considers serving as IFDA President the most crowning moment of his professional career. He is proud to call current IFDA President Mark Sherfy a friend, and has come back to the board after a two-year hiatus to join him.

Jay was voted the 2018 Casey, IL Citizen of the Year. He is the President of Casey Industries, Inc., which provides economic development resources to the community. His family includes four children and two grandsons.

He feels that the IFDA is stronger now than it has been in over a decade, and is incredibly proud to have served IFDA in the past and again in the present.

Tom & Traci Macz graduated in 2004 from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale Mortuary School. After graduating, they served their apprenticeship at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg & Mason City, IL. In October of 2005, they moved to Tom’s hometown of Watseka, IL to work for Knapp Funeral Homes, Inc. In February of 2011, the couple moved to Traci’s hometown of Sandoval to begin working for Day Funeral Homes, owned by Dennis Day.

Tom and Traci took over management of Day Funeral Homes in late 2012. In 2013, they purchased the business which included sites in Sandoval and Patoka, IL. and the name changed to Day Macz Funeral Homes. In the following year, Tom & Traci welcomed their first child, George Pulver Macz. 

In 2015, the couple purchased Irvin Funeral Homes with locations in Centralia and Odin, IL from the family of the late Larry Irvin.

On May 31st, 2018 Tom & Traci’s family was blessed with a new addition to their family; Charles Thomas Macz was born.
