COVID-19 Information

3/17/2020: The IFDA Board of Directors recommends following the CDC guidelines on gatherings, and this includes those directly related to any funerals, visitations, or graveside services.

All gatherings of ten (10) or more should be canceled, and/or only conducted with a limit of ten (10) or less people. Viewings should only be permissive with ten (10) or less people. Graveside services should be private and conducted with ten (10) or less people. This information is subject to change per recommendations by the Federal Government and CDC.

These implemented directives are to comply with current recommendations by the Federal Government and the CDC. Indeed, our compliance with these directives is to keep your families safe, as well as the staff at the respective funeral homes.

3/19/2020: After receiving some additional information, we would like to clarify our statement of March 17th. The CDC guidance states, “There is currently no known risk associated with being in the same room at a funeral or visitation service with the body of someone who died of COVID-19.” Additionally, IFDA has received clarification from NFDA that embalming is not required prior to any type of service. This is a rapidly changing situation, and we will do our best to provide the most up-to-date information available.

3/23/2020: On Friday, March 20, 2020, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a “Shelter in Place” executive order to slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout the state. On page 7 of the order, “Funeral services” are considered an essential business and operation, and are able to remain open during this time: “Funeral services. Funeral, mortuary, cremation, burial, cemetery, and related services.” Along with the CDC and IDPH, IFDA interprets this to mean that funeral services ARE permitted, but still urges you to adhere to the CDC’s recommendation of a maximum of 10 people present if at all possible. IFDA will continue to monitor the situation and provide up-to-date information as it becomes available.

3/23/2020: If you are running low on PPE, you will need to contact your local health department. They are able to request emergency federal supplies.

3/27/2020: We are reminding all funeral homes to adhere to the Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines directly related to any funerals, visitations, or graveside services. All gatherings of ten (10) or more should be canceled, and/or only conducted with a limit of ten (10) or less people. Viewings should only be permissive with ten (10) or less people. Graveside services should be private and conducted with ten (10) or less people. It is imperative that we adhere to the guidelines so that additional restraints are not placed upon us.
