Welcome to the Illinois Funeral Directors Association!

We know you work very hard to achieve success, whether as a funeral director or a funeral home owner. As “The voice for funeral directors in Illinois" since 1881, we want you to know that the Illinois Funeral Directors Association is working hard to promote the funeral care profession statewide. IFDA's mission is to advocate for the advancement of Funeral Service and member success.

IFDA is the largest association dedicated to licensed funeral care professionals in the state of Illinois with just over 1,300 members and growing. We remain committed to doing everything possible to grow your association, your profession, and your business.

By becoming a member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association, you become a fundamental part of an association comprised of licensed funeral directors and embalmers who pledge to service Illinois families while exemplifying the highest ethical standards within the funeral service profession.

Who is eligible to become a member of IFDA?

If you fall within one of the following categories, you are welcome to join:

  • Currently licensed funeral director and/or embalmer with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) in good standing,
  • A licensed intern in the state of Illinois with IDFPR,
  • A student currently enrolled in an accredited Mortuary Science program, OR
  • A supplier of goods and/or services to the funeral profession (Associate Membership Details HERE)
Are there benefits to being a member of IFDA?
Of course! A "Member Benefits Guide" is available for download HERE, or you can continue reading below.
Being a member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association means being a part of the largest network of funeral directors in the state of Illinois. You gain access to leaders of the funeral service profession that can help you solve problems or offer a timely referral. IFDA maintains relationships with IDFPR, IVRS, the State Treasurer, and the Comptroller to serve as your voice on new policies and regulatory initiatives.
The IFDA website and member community is available to members 24/7. Take advantage of the resources available to you to stay abreast of current trends and news that affects you or your business, including the IFDA eNewsletter, special alerts, and the IFDA Facebook page. In the event of the death of an IFDA member or their immediate family, an employee of a member firm, or a funeral service provider or merchandiser, IFDA will distribute a Death Notice on their behalf to all other IFDA members.
IFDA Membership offers you the opportunity to help lead your colleagues. Be a part of leadership for the association and join an IFDA Committee, or even apply for a board position! There are yearly opportunities to become involved with others sharing your common interests and enthusiasm for funeral service. Help us make a difference!
The IFDA Annual Convention is the largest gathering of funeral professionals in the state of Illinois. Our goal is to present new ideas from innovators, new products and services offered by suppliers, and create a network of valuable resources for you to take advantage of. Along with the classes offered at Convention, our seminars provide educational opportunities across the state. Best of all, IFDA members receive steep discounts on attending all IFDA events.
Do you prefer to learn in the classroom, with live online webinars, or with home-study books? IFDA’s flexible and affordable lineup of continuing education programs will help you stay on track with your license requirements. Additionally, the monthly eNewsletter will let you know about all outside CE opportunities IFDA is made aware of. IFDA will manage and maintain all of your IFDA CE credits, and you can view them anytime in your website profile.
IFDA Preferred Providers offer service discounts specially available to IFDA Members. Additionally, the Discount Program provides valuable savings on products and services that funeral homes can use every day.
The IFDA website is a treasure trove of knowledge and resources. Whether you need to find a commonly used form in our forms library, need to clarify continuing education requirements, or view an archived eNewsletter, the members-only resources on the website can save you a lot of time and headaches.
The Illinois Award of Funeral Service Distinction was instituted by the Illinois Funeral Directors Association to recognize IFDA members for their outstanding contributions and achievements in select areas, and to promote initiatives in social and educational areas. IFDA members are eligible to apply for award consideration, allowing you to showcase your funeral’s home successes in your community.
IFDA members qualify for our health insurance program whether you are an individual or funeral home owner. Options include individual and group plans, and group plans are open to those with as few as two individuals from the same organization.
Are you looking to make a change for yourself or your business? Find your next great career opportunity or hire the missing piece for your funeral home using IFDA’s Career Center.
Our political advocacy team looks out for the best interests of the funeral service profession across Illinois by maintaining a presence at the State Capitol, while federal issues are tackled in Washington D.C. in partnership with NFDA. Our strong political voice allows us to prevent bad bills from progressing, while avoiding changes in regulation that would add more red tape to funeral service. Together with members, we participate in calls to action to stop bad policy from affecting our profession. Our efforts help maintain one of the strongest funeral director licenses in the country.
The IFDA Legal Advice Program provides members the opportunity to answer legal questions when a concern arises by putting you in touch with a licensed attorney. Be sure and take advantage of your one-on-one legal consultation offered during each year of your IFDA membership.
Members are able to take advantage of IFDA’s consumer-to-member and member-to-member dispute resolution, fairly resolving grievances before they escalate to formal complaints to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
